How To Add Users To A Team Project

יום שני, פברואר 16, 2009

A customer asked me: how do I add users to my team project? Because this is a task that you need to do in every project you create I will show the basics in this post. So where to start? Just right click the project, point on “Team Project Settings” and click on “Group Membership” Note: You can add users from the “Team Members” tab in the Team Explorer too but I will cover that in a future post. A window is opened at that point with 4 groups, these are the basic team project groups, you can add new groups if you...

TF30224 error when creating a new team project

יום שלישי, פברואר 3, 2009

Hi While using Team explorer on the TFS machine, we tried to create a new team project and got error TF30224 :"Failed to retrieve projects from the report server. Please check that the SQL Server Reporting Services Web and Windows services are running and you have sufficient privileges for creating a project."So we followed the recomendations and validated the privileges and that services are running. We followed instructions from this link: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/cda9e94a-b330-47b0-99ad-d1c73bee4a16/(David Jung - thanx for correcting me with that URL) we checked that we have a "content manager" permission in reporting services, that we have  DBCreator role in SQL Server...

How To Work with Team System using Excel – Rosario: Parent Child relation

יום שלישי, אוקטובר 14, 2008

This post is the sixth post out of seven that builds the Excel Guide. See the first post here On this post I will talk about the Parent Child relations between work items and how it works with Excel. In the Rosario there are new type of links, but the most influencing link type that was added to the Rosario is the Parent/Child link. Parent/Child link links many child nodes to each parent node, a parent can have many children but each child have only one parent so what we get is an hierarchy of a tree type. In...

Visual studio gets confused between TFS servers

יום שני, יוני 2, 2008

I've been trying to figure out some issue: I choose TFS server (connect TFS server from VSTS), I get servers ServerA and ServerB. I choose serverA and Team Explorer shows me serverA with serverB's team projects...   Furhermore, WITIMPORT /t serverA will import my XMLs to serverB !!! (a workaround found was to delete tfs client cache: Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Team Foundation\1.0\Cache)   Is it possible? How?   Well, the problem was in the way the the second TFS server was created - by backing up the original TFS server data and restoring it to a different server. Both servers share tha same instance id !!! So...

Managing non mergable files in Team System

יום חמישי, מאי 15, 2008

Hi, Today I met a very angry developer. This developer and his colleague are using some generator that creates a huge text file (XML based but with its own file suffix) and this file is saved in TFS source control. One programmer checked out the file, modified and checked in. The other programmer checked out (assuming he was working on latest version - well, guess again...), and then tried to check in. Then, check in operation failed because of confilcts. Merging was suggested, but It's almost impossible to handle the merging of this file. This programmer was blaming Team system: "This...

Continuous Integration Service for TFS 2005 – supporting builds per sub folder

יום חמישי, אפריל 3, 2008

Hi Unlike TFS 2008, Continuous Integration service is not included in TFS 2005, and a solution is provided by microsoft here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms364045(VS.80).aspx . We download the binaries, create the CI virtual directory, fix the web.config file, and activate bissubscribe.exe.Is that all? Well, not exactly. This solution works well only if we use a single continuous Integration build for our team project. But what if we wish to have many continuous Integration builds, one build for a separate sub folder in TFS?Well, In this case, we have a problem. But this problem has a solution: Benjamin Day provides us an alternative CI that supports many...

TFS identifies a user as someone else

יום שישי, אוקטובר 26, 2007

Recently I had a problem when trying to open a new workspace in Team System. It identified the current user as being someone else (in my case the server thought that I am the server's local administrator). Well, after scratching my head for a few minutes I tried deleting the workspace and recreating it, I've even tried removing the server and reconnecting to it but nothing seems to fix the problem. The problem occurs because in some point I logged into the server with...

Moving TFS Databases to new destination

יום חמישי, ספטמבר 27, 2007

Last week I installed Team Foundation Server (single server mode) for one of our customers. Due to hardware problem, I installed TFS on default drive C which has low capacity: ~50GB space. After couple of days the customer installed another hard disk (160GB). He asked me to move TFS databases to the new hard disk. These are the steps I used to move the TFS databases from drive C to the new hard disk. Preparations Ask the users (and make sure...) to stop working against TFS. Backup TFS database or make sure you have access to the daily...

Team Foundation Server and SQL Server Collation

יום שישי, אוגוסט 10, 2007

One problem, we are having sometimes during Team Foundation Server setup, caused by the fact that TFS has serious limitations on SQL server collation. To be exact, following collation are not supported: Accent Insensitive Case sensitive Binary Binary2 In case, we have to install TFS on top of existing SQL Server, there is a good chance, that System Health Check report, prepared by TFS setup, will contain "SQL Server collation is not set to one supported by Team Foundation Server" error. What can we do now? Before we can proceed with the setup, we have to change MS-SQL collation to one of supported by...
