How To Edit Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Chart Category Colors

What’s wrong with the following chart?

According to one of my customers, the chart should display high priority Cases category in red and medium priority Cases category in blue.

Original chart colors

The customer is always right. Let’s see how we can switch the category colors in few simple steps:

  1. Export the chart and save the exported XML file to your disk (Charts –> Export Chart)
  2. Open the saved XML file in Visual Studio or Notepad
  3. In order to find out the colors we want to deal with, activate  a color picker utility, such as IE Developer tools (Click F12 –> Tools –> Show Color Picker)
  4. Point the Color Picker arrow to the High category legend color to get the color RGB values.

    Choose color with the color picker

  5. Find the PaletteCustomColors element in the XML file in Visual Studio, and locate the RGB values series to match the color picker result for the High category

    <Chart Palette="None" PaletteCustomColors="97,142,206; 209,98,96; 168,203,104; 142,116,178; 93,186,215; 255,155,83; 148,172,215; 217,148,147; 189,213,151; 173,158,196; 145,201,221; 255,180,138">

  6. Point the color picker arrow to the Medium category legend color to get the color RGB values.

    Choose color with the color picker

  7. In the PaletteCustomColors element, locate the RGB values series to match the color picker result for the Medium category

    <Chart Palette="None" PaletteCustomColors="97,142,206; 209,98,96; 168,203,104; 142,116,178; 93,186,215; 255,155,83; 148,172,215; 217,148,147; 189,213,151; 173,158,196; 145,201,221; 255,180,138">

  8. Switch positions for the two series. The element should look like this now

    <Chart Palette="None" PaletteCustomColors="209,98,96; 97,142,206; 168,203,104; 142,116,178; 93,186,215; 255,155,83; 148,172,215; 217,148,147; 189,213,151; 173,158,196; 145,201,221; 255,180,138">

  9. Save the XML file and import back to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 (Charts –> Import Chart). Rename the chart if you want or run over the original chart.

You are done. The result chart shows the High category in red as required. This was demonstrated on a user level chart, but applies just the same for an Organization level chart.

    This only works if the Category values are constant and always appear in the results. So within the results that are being visualized by the chart if there are no “Low” values then the current “Green” color would be reassigned to Normal and High.

    How do you make the color assignments static so that regardless if the values appear in the chart.. if they do they get the same color everytime?
