Mobile apps, Web/Cloud apps and everything in between

9 ביוני 2011

After so much has been said and done on those subjects, I believe there’s no doubt that the pair humanity-technology is in the course of a revolution rather than a linear evolution… Trying to illustrate the significance of the era, an equivalent would be the cell-phones revolution. Imagine, just for a second, a world without cell-phones! To me, just thinking of it is terrifying…Now the next step after voice communication anywhere is obviously what we are experiencing today which is: “Computation & Network access anywhere” which brings quite a promise and excitement with it on one hand but a few...

Migrating to Win Azure without the Migraines

6 במרץ 2011

We've spoken a lot about the advantages of being on the cloud, be it lower cost of ownership, light-weight, secured by design, etc. However estimates indicate that there are still some 15 billion lines of code in active VB6 systems today, with other .Net applications adding another 7.5 billion. This poses a technical challenge with major economic implications.  How can we encourage organizations to get legacy client/server software working on the cloud? One thing we can do is show them how simple it is. Allow me to demonstrate – literally – I’ll be leading a Microsoft Webcast called ‘Moving Client/Server...

Using Dundas Charts library to render charts in Visual WebGui

23 בנובמבר 2010

It is a very common requirement to have charts in our applications. No doubt that Dundas Charts is a common choice and a very good one too I believe… I guess that is due to the large verity of chart types and the common, very convenient, Chart component that is used to create many types of charts. Many of the Dundas charts capabilities are based on on-the-fly generation of chart images. In the following walkthrough I’m going to show you how to add such charts to your Visual WebGui application. Step 1: Create the DundasChart UserControl. ·         Right click the project and...

.NET Client/Server desktop application to plain browser Cloud/SaaS ready – AssessmentTool session

22 בנובמבר 2010

Join me to the 1st of a series of sessions in which I will walk you through the usage of the new CloudMove tools suite. The session takes place Thursday, Dec 2nd @ 17:00 GMT+2; in the session, I'm going to walk you through the first available tool in the suite which is the AssessmentTool. I will run the AssessmentTool on .NET compiled Assemblies (dlls and exes) and explain how to read and understand the report which indicates on the readiness of the application for Cloud/SaaS transposition and how to assess the amounts and complexities of the manual adjustments that are required for the move. In addition, I'm going to speak a...

Does Visual WebGui represent a Declarative or rather an Imperative development style?

21 בנובמבר 2010

This interesting subject does bother some of the .NET developers out there... one of the reasons for which it is so interesting to understand this deeper, is the perception on declarative programming representing a more advanced approach... Well, while there is no doubt about declarative being the more advanced approach, we should carefully go about determining what is really declarative programming and where exactly the thin line between declarative and imperative programming goes. I guess that if you read this article, you already know by heart that: declarative programming requires you to declare what you want to achieve (the framework then does all it takes to make it...

Making a Visual WebGui application run on Azure Cloud

14 בנובמבר 2010

When you create a new CloudService within Visual Studio 2008 or 2010, you get to choose what type of Role(s) you want to implement. If you have Visual WebGui 6.4RC1 installed, you should see a Visual WebGui WebRole, then you will need to follow the steps below in order to make it run on Azure Cloud: 1.  Enable native code execution flag within the ServiceDefinition.csdef: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><ServiceDefinition name="CloudService1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ServiceHosting/2008/10/ServiceDefinition">  <WebRole name="VisualWebGuiWebRole1" enableNativeCodeExecution="true">    <InputEndpoints>      <InputEndpoint name="HttpIn" protocol="http" port="80" />    </InputEndpoints>    <ConfigurationSettings>      <Setting name="DiagnosticsConnectionString" />    </ConfigurationSettings>  </WebRole></ServiceDefinition> 2. Within the Web.Config file, add the following web.servers section (which apparently missing in the current...

A few words on a new Cloud-Move – Assessment-Tool

As I often discuss migration and modernization matters of Client/Server apps to Web/Cloud in my blog, I want to write a few words on the newly released Assessment Tool from Gizmox (the company I work for). The Assessment Tool is a stand alone, completely free tool which is targeted to run on the compiled .NET assemblies (exe and dll) of the source application to migrate. The supported assessable technologies at this point are Windows Forms based applications developed using .NET versions 2.0 to 4.0; future releases are expected to support other technologies as well (i.e VB6, Oracle Forms, Delphi etc). The upcoming versions of...
