Ricardo, If you are looking for comments/feedback about the tool, the right place to look would be here: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/guyt/archive/2008/03/22/windows-server-core-coreconfigurator-to-the-rescue.aspx This one is only the download area. Cheers, Guy

John, "What do you think about adding the WINS config also to the network config dialoge" I might do that, but no promises. I didn't see that as high priority and took a decision to leave it without WINS unless there is a demand for it.

Alexander, What additional functions are you specifically looking for ? Remember that the whole point is to have a basic tool to get you up and running and do all the management using RSAT tools.

Hello! Lovely - I'll use it in Windows XP (I like Networking button). BTW, did you write it in VB6? Regards, Roman

Guy Teverovsky said:

Roman, you are right on the spot. I am not much of a Dev guy, so when it comes to GUI apps, its either VB6 or C# for me. As .NET was not an option for Server Core (you can't install .NET on Core), I checked whether a simple VB6 app will work on Core. All I had to do was to copy the VB6 runtime and I was able to create basic GUI apps. Only the simplest controls can be used, but that was enough for what I wanted.

To Ingo You do not see the point. Even if you use a gui to manage your core servers you will still have the smaller attack surface. So yes a greate tool for managing core. GREATE WORK.

Ingo, the reason for writing the tool was to help those that are not CLI savvies and still want a quick way to install a fully functional Server Core. No one forces you to use it, but as I see it, the tool will make the beginner's life easier. I hope that the tool will help to increase the adoption level of Server Core. It's not a tool for experienced admins - just a helper tool for beginners.

CyberBoB, this is a **basic** GUI configuration utility. There are numerous features that can be added, but this will diminish the whole point of having a Server Core.

Craig, have you looked at iscsicli.exe ? sc config msiSCSI start= auto net start msiSCSI iscsicli.exe will put you interactive mode. Type "?" and you should be able to manipulate iscsi configuration.

Thank you for a very useful tool! I like it a lot. Just an observation - if the Default gateway and Preferred DNS server are set to the same ip address, the default gateway is removed on the Network Settings form. I had to use netsh to get around this. Any reason why they can't have the same ip address?Seems this is quite a common configuration.

Guy Teverovsky said:

Steve, are you using the latest build ? Do you get any errors when applying the settings ?
04-06-2008 17:28

Steve said:

Guy, Thanks for the response. I'm using version 1.0.141 of CoreConfigurator. I don't get any errors, but if I enter the same ip address for gateway and dns server the gateway address is cleared.
04-06-2008 18:23

Guy Teverovsky said:

Steve, I can't reproduce it with the latest build. There was an issue with the gateway being cleared when using static IP, but it has been fixed. Can you please download the latest build and reinstall ? If you still have problems, drop me a line using the feedback for (http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/guyt/contact.aspx) and I will try to figure it out.

Great tool, however there's a slight small mistake in the CoreConfigurator When using the new DCPROMO option, the: SiteName=Default-First-Site-Name is written twice in your unattend.txt file, so you have to remove it manually by hand else the installation of your new DC will fail.

I have one feature request....A version exactly like this except as you click the buttons it takes input for each setting and when you click compile it creates a script to configure the server with the exact configuration details you input. That would help because now I wouldnt have to run it on the server and could use the script as a post build script. Love the program you read my mind with it!

jcornel7, great idea! Unfortunately it's not that easy to implement it - currently the tool is extensively using Win32 API to perform tasks and you should note that there are tasks that require some knowledge about the platform you are running on (whether this is 32/64bit, network interface names, volume IDs, etc...) Yet this is a great idea - if I get some spare time, I might take a look at writing a tool like this.
Someone, I'm not able to reproduce it. Can you please provide the steps and platform (x64/x86) that cause the duplicate ?
I also ran into this problem, I created a clean Core install on a MS Virtual PC 2007 (so 32-bit) I then run CoreConfigurator and did the network / hostname / timezone / winrm / display and RDP settings. My timezone = GMT+1 and locale is Dutch (Netherlands) I than run DCPROMO from the CoreConfigurator and had the double sitename in the unattend file.

Great tool! I would like to suggest two things that i think will make the application much easier to use: 1. Add the application folder to the PATH statement in the registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment 2. Change the name of the EXE file to something shorter than "Coreconfigurator.exe". For Example: "cconfig.exe" Anyway, thanks for the effort!

Great Tool, really makes it easier for administration and initial configuration, What about possibly placing something to add a statement into the registry to disable ipv6 initially. Not a big deal but i would imagine most medium businesses will not be implenting Ipv6 anytime soon.
