"I do some software development at home…"
I would argue that that doesn't make you a hobbyist.

Hoybbist defintion by Merriam-Webster: ": a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation"

It makes you a professional who also do some work after hours, and your toolset reflects that. I wonder how many hobbyist programmers put unit testing and version control high on their list of tasks to tackle.

Sometimes, getting professional developers to use version control and do unit testing can be a challenge.

Although I write software at work as well the programing I do at home is different. I use different programing languages, and write projects I can not do as part of my job.
Perhaps I should have named this post "7 tools for the home developer" but I really think of my eork at as a hobby – I develop software for the fun of writing it.

Unit tests – the last project I wrote without unit tests had a big bug I missed – never again!

As for source control – if you want to put your project on the internet you need some source control – SVN seems like the simples solution possible.
