I started working with SQL Server when I had to support an Access 2.0 application that had linked tables in SQL Server version 6.5. Working with such a product was really interesting and I have learned a lot about scripting and administering the server. I realy liked the simple but powerful features.  

My first attempt to use SQL Server was for maintaining a reliable storage for the players' statistics, high scores hall of fame and color preferences of each player in a Monopoly game I programmed in VB4 when I was 11. Having some bad experience with INI files, and not knowing back then enough about Access / Excel data storage abilities, I used the big guns (SQL Server 7.0) just to store one table with 5 rows.

But I must say, it was a good call: Never has SQL Server let me down, and it is because of that Monopoly game I know how reliable and fast SQL Server is, when dealing with tiny and 100-gigs databases alike :)

יום אחד נגש אליי מנהל  ההדרכה ובקש שאתחיל ללמד את התלמידים על מוצר שנקרא

SQL 7

שאלתי אותו מה זה המוצר הזה והוא אמר שמדובר במוצר לניהול מסדי נתונים. לא היה לי נעים לשאול מה זה אומר בדיוק "מסדי נתונים" וגם לא היה לי נעים לסרב

עם זאת הייתה לי שאלה נוספת.

אני - תאמר לי בבקשה, המוצר הזה, זה מוצר טוב

?

מנהל ההדרכה - לא, זה חרא של דטהבייס אבל הוא של מיקרוסופט ויום יבוא והוא יכבוש את העולם, כולם ישתמשו רק בו

שנת 2000, מתכנת לאחר סיום הלימודים יוצא לשיא הבועה

אני התחלתי כמתכנת delphi, כן כן בחברה קטנה מאוד.

אחרי כשבועיים תפס אותי סמנכ"ל הפיתוח ואמר שנראה לו שאני כמוהו, לא מסוגל  לשבת ליותר מכמה דקות וזה לא מהתכונות של מתכנת מצטיין בדיוק.

או במילים אחרות, מתכנת טוב אתה לא.הוא התקין לי SQL 2000 SQL ואמר לי שמעכשיו אני DBA.

I grew-up to be an SQL Server DBA from the very base... mastered the internals of IBM DB2 on MVS OS/3900 system. After my sight degraded from 6/6 to black/green I upgraded my skils to Oracle 8.1.7 and it's many many fix packs... After completly losing patiance executing "commit" after every command line I found my peace in SQL Server 2000. This was around the year 2003-2004...

The first limousine arrives and out steps Oracle followed by 4 people

Interviewer: Who have you brought along?

Oracle: I have 4 DBA's in tow. One to install me, one to design the databases, one to administer me and the other to justify the cost.

A second limo arrives and out steps DB2 followed by 40 people

Interviewer: Who have you bought along?

DB2: I have 2 DBA's, 2 hardware specialist and 36 consultants.

Another limo arrives and out steps SQL Server all on his own

Interviewer: Why haven't you brought anyone?

SQL Server: I didn't bring anyone because I am easy to install and am basically self managing. But I did bring this URL for sqlteam when the *** hits the fan.
