ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions: Basic Steps To Create Dynamic Data Web Application - Focus On Security and Performance
This meeting walks through the steps to take to create simple Dynamic Data Web Application.
And represent the development model for DTO [Data Transfer Object] and Input Validation options,
all using the new ASP.NET 3.5 Extension for Visual Studio 2008.
- Focus on Security
You can create data driven web pages using GridView and DataSets.
The drawback is that validation is not that straightforward.
On the other hand, you can create custom collections and manually data bind it - the code is much nicer and cleaner and validation rules are easy to add, but there is also the need of writing some extra code. In the case of Dynamic Data there is fantastic combination of design time productivity and also a clean code where validation rules are applied directly to the model, that make
less room for making mistakes to introduce security vulnerability.
- Focus on Performance
Ready to go templates that are generated with the default Dynamic Data projects are already implementing AJAX and paging.
Walking that path reduces dramatically the amount of data that make round trips over the wire.
Large HTML output - including ViewState - is one of the biggest performance vulnerabilities noticed recently.
AJAX and paging are a great way to overcome this issue.

Microsoft AJAX Library + ASP.NET AJAX Extensions = Power to the Clients
ASP.NET AJAX is a free framework for quickly creating efficient and interactive
Web applications that work across all popular browsers. ASP.NET AJAX is built-into
ASP.NET 3.5. It is also available as a separate download for ASP.NET 2.0.
In this session we will cover:

MS AJAX library that provide a complete solution for creating client-based Web applications.
The client script libraries support object-oriented development, cross-browser compatibility,
asynchronous calls to Web services, and behaviors and components for creating a full-featured UI.

ASP.NET AJAX Extensions Web server controls that provide a declarative way to emit markup and
client script for "Atlas" features.

Web services, such as ASP.NET profiles, that can add useful server-side features to an "Atlas" application.

Wow – can you believe it is time to celebrate the 10th Birthday of IVBUG ?!! That’s right - it has been 10 years and over 100 actual meetings that we have been getting together to learn and share experiences about building better applications with VB and .NET. We all do it because we enjoy it and benefit from it, so we won’t make a really big fuss, but we will have something special to mark the occasion.
LINQ is a set of extensions to the .NET Framework that encompass Language INtegrated Query, set, and transform operations. It extends C# and Visual Basic with native language syntax for queries and provides class libraries to take advantage of these capabilities.
Although many of you may already be familiar with LINQ, we have decided to have a night of LINQ of our own - including a unique VB twist. In the first presentation, LINQ to SQL, Adlai will focus on the practical more advanced aspects of using LINQ in place of classic ADO.NET querying. In the second presentation, we will see how LINQ to XML eliminates the complexity and pain of processing XML with XPath and XSLT – including some very cool features that are available in VB and not C#.
