Error: TFS55030 When Running RenameDT Command

“ERROR: TF55030: Rename Data Tier failed.  Please verify that the supplied Data Tier name is a valid Team Foundation Data Tier name, that the Data Tier can be accessed on the network and that you have administrative rights.”

Most chances that the problem is because you have shutdown your old TFS.

In order to fix the problem just load your old TFS and rerun the command.

In case that doesn’t help run the following command line:

Set TfsDetailedErrors=1

Rerun the RenameDT command, now you will get more details on the error so you can troubleshot the problem.

Have Fun!!!

This is particularly danger. If you lost your old TFS, you will not be able to run it. In procedure for moving TFS from one HW configuration to another, there is a section refer as "To rename the data-tier server and update the integration database with the name of the new application-tier server" and this avoid running of old TFS. Please see at msdn.microsoft.com/.../ms404869.aspx

Dragan Jankovic,

I wrote it in regards to this procedure, the rename process try to see that the hold machine exist in order to continue.

Many people shuts down the old machine when doing this process and get the error, where there is no reason of doing so.

This process just create another machine running the data bases from the old machine.

You can still work on both machines just keep in mind that now you are running on different data bases.
