The Data DUDE team announced that Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals Service Release 1 is ready for consumption!
To summarize the knowledgebase article, the following features have been added:
- Cross-database references: You can reference objects within different databases by using database project references or by referencing a database metafile (.dbmeta).
- Improved SQL Server file groups support: You can define files within file groups as database project properties instead of having to create files and file groups within the pre-deployment storage script.
- Variables: Variables can now be defined in the database properties and referenced from your deployment deployment scripts.
The Service Release is made available in 9 languages:
The knowledge base (KB) article describing the service release can be found here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936612/

Since its release, Visual Studio team system for database professionals (or, as we like to call it: db dude) has only supported SQL Server 2000 and 2005. Cameon Skinner is blogging about thier team plans of adding support for more (non-microsoft) databases. I have a long list of partners and customers waiting for the dude to connect to their Oracle and Sybase stores and I hope that the new version will support them. Some users try to open work item queries in excel but get this error message:
"TF80042: The document cannot be opened because you do not have Microsoft Excel 2003 or later, or one of its components installed. For more information, see the Team Foundation Installation Guide."
To solve this problem In Excel 2007 (or any other MS Office 2007 application) you need to perform the following steps:
1. Close Visual Studio.
2. In Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs locate your Office application (in this case: 'MS Office Professional Plus 2007'), select it and click on the 'Change' button.
3. Select 'Add or Remove features' and click 'Continue'.
4. In the tree view, expand 'Microsoft Office Excel' (or any other MS office 2007 application needed) and set the .NET Programmability Support option to 'run from my computer'.
5. Click 'update'.
6. Start Visual Studio and try again.
To solve this problem In Excel 2003 you need to perform the following steps:
These errors are caused when you install Team Explorer before you install Excel. The Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Run Time will not be configured to work correctly with Team Explorer and must be repaired:
1. Close Visual Studio.
2. In Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs select ‘Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Run Time’ and Click ‘Change/Remove’.
3. In the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Run Time Setup wizard, click ‘Repair’, and then click ‘Next’.
4. Start Visual Studio and try again.
* If the problem still persists, reinstall Team Explorer.

I’m sure that I don’t have to tell you about Microsoft blogs: http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/default.aspx?siteid=1
There is a forum for everything and everyone, no matter what part of the Microsoft products or technologies you are using; you will find a forum that discusses exactly the issues that keep you awake at night.
We, as developers and ALM people are using the .NET development and Team System forums as a mean of communicating with our community colleges. Since the concept of knowledge sharing is highly assimilated in our DNA we do our best to give back to the community. The other day, our contribution was acknowledged in the Visual Studio Team System – Database professional forum http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1771031&SiteID=1
Maor David has supplied a top number of answers in the forum. Maor, our ALM team is proud of you :)
just a reminder, we meet today at our regular spot (Microsoft office, Raanana, 17:30).
Today’s topic is SCRUM methodology. Danko, a certified SCRUM master will talk about his experience in using Project Server and VSTS through the development lifecycle.

Last week Microsoft and NESS organized a three days extreme learning. I was one of the lecturers and I talked about Unit testing, TDD, Load testing, Performance testing, Web testing in VSTS for Developers and Testers.
For all of you who missed it or just want to take a look at it, you can download it from here.
If you have any feedback about the lectures, let me know :-)
Yesterday I gave a session about Team System For Database Professionals in the Are you Ready 2008 event. The audience had good time and went away with valuable knowledge about Team System For Database Professionals .
