Sela Dev Days - MTM, Automation and Load Testing Lectures

Yesterday I had the pleasure to give a Full day lecture about Microsoft Test Manager, Unit Tests, Web Test, Coded UI Test and Load Testing.

We started with a short talk about ALM and ways to improve your development and Testing process using Agile, CMMI and Scrum, then we apply this to how should we work with Microsoft Test Manager with different methodologies (Scrum etc) to create better Test Coverage and better experience for Tester and Developer alike.

After we played with Microsoft Test Manager, we move to Test Automation with Visual Studio 2010, Web Performance Test - we saw couple of ways how Web Testing can save the tester lots of time and effort for Web and Desktop applications – (See Videos)

We moves to Load Testing and talked about the 10 Steps to perform good load testing with Visual Studio 2010 (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/books/LoadTesting.aspx), and of course I’ve showed how to create good, reliable and fast Load Testing with Visual Studio 2010 ultimate, also we talked about create Agents to assist your Load Testing with IP Switching and create much larger load testing scenario.

At the end we talked about Coded UI Testing, the benefit of functional automated testing based on .NET and not some Script language, also the limitation and how to increase some known issues with Coded UI Testing.

Automation Is Also For Developers

On the 16th I’ll presented the Applied Software Testing with Visual Studio 2010 lecture on SDP 2011 Conference.
Several customers talked with me about my lecture and asked why isn’t a lecture on Automation for Developers?
My lecture title contains “Software Testing” and so developer automatically think it’s not for me, it’s for Software Testers!

As a Developer you should perform testing on your application before you passed it over to QA, but you think Unit Test is enough? It’s not!!!
But doing manual testing after you finished developing it’s annoying, so you skip this step === Annoying Bugs

In my lecture I’ll demonstrate how to create Automatic Testing for WinForms, WPF, Silverlight and Web Application in minutes, so as a developer you can create lots of automatic testing (UI and more) that will help you save time and nerves.

I’ll start saying – Thanks everyone who participate at my lecture in Teched Israel 2010, I’ll also like to say thanks to Tzvia Gitlin Troyna the ALM sessions manager and to Sela Group for helping and supporting me during that period.

My Session was loaded with Information regarding Automated/Manual Testing in Visual Studio 2010 & Microsoft Test Manager and there is not doubt that the Testing Space in Visual Studio 2010 is the future of Automated/Manual Testing.

One of my previous posts about Coded UI I showed how to Run CodedUI Test From Another Application.
In this post I’ll show how to use Mstest to run Coded UI Tests thought command line.

Open up with Visual Studio 2010 Command Prompt Window.
Browse to your Test directory.
Enter the following command prompt to run all tests
Mstest /testcontainer:TestProject.dll /test:CodedUITest1

Coded UI Test – Tip 4 – Add Unused Controls to UI Map

If you are using Coded UI for advanced tests or even a simple test but with complex logic you might faced the following dilemma:

How can I add a control inside the UI Map without recording or assertion that control?

Why? Here is a simple scenario:

I’ve create a simple Coded UI Test that opens Calculator (again) and perform couple of click and stops.

Now, I don’t want to add assertion! I just want to use that control for internal logic – I want to replay the test until the sum is over 100 -> how???

Now I’ve drag the Assertions marker on a new control (Results window), as you can see from the picture below there is two new objects under the CalculatorWindow tree.

This is not enough, In order to add that control inside the UI Map you need to click on the “Add Control to UI Control Map” button (Alt +C)

And then click "Generate Code” to actually add the control to the UI Map.

Now from the Code point of view, you can see the UIItem12Text exists and available for become part of my Test Logic.

Coded UI Test – Tip 3 – Locate Controls Using Win + I

In my last post we talked about Coded UI Test – Tip 2 – Assertions, but there are much more things you can do using CodedUI Test Builder –today I’ll show one more cool tip that will help you recording CodedUI Test much more easily.

So today is how to locate control using Hot-Key, Why?

Two reasons:

Easy
It will allow you to locate inner control that are not available while dragging mouse.

For example: ComboBox Items – Let’s say I want to get the Bing object inside the Internet Explorer Context Menu.
If I’ll use the Assertion (Drag over the control) I’ll fail! because when drag the the Assertion sight the ComboBox (ContextMenu) will loss the focus and closed.

So, in order to complete this mission all you need to do is – Open the ComboBox place the mouse over the object you when to collect and press – WinKey + I

Microsoft Key Note At SIGIST 2010 - Test Automation – Done

Today I had the honor to participate at SIGIST 2010 conference (The third year) and be a part of Microsoft Key Note on Test Automation in Visual Studio

2010 and Microsoft Test Manager. (Last year lecture - Sigist 2009 – Lab Management & Pictures)

I’ve showed couple of cool demos using “Fast-Forward for Manual Testing”, Rich Bugs using Data Collectors and Lab Manager solution.

And I showed a short demo on how to use Eclipse IDE with TFS 2010 using Team Explorer Everywhere (Heterogeneous).

I got great feedbacks from people attending and I’ll would like to thank you all and hope to see you next year!

After a long and exciting day Developer Academy 4 is Over and I can come back to write posts. :-D

Yesterday I had two lecture, this first one on TDM (R&D Managers) called “The Rise of Testing” on CodedUI Testing and Intel Success story.

The Second one was “Introduction To CodedUI Testing and Microsoft Test Manager“, you can download the presentation from Download Presentations or see the video Developer Academy 4 Videos.
The Demos will be available in Developer Academy 4 site so I’ll keep you informed.
