I Don’t like “Aero”, but I want thumbnail previews

I don’t like the “Aero” themes in Vista/Windows 7. I tried. I really did. I decided to work for several days with Aero and it was uncomfortable – and it has nothing to do with video card performance. It’s distracting. I simply don’t like it.

I guess I’m entitled to my opinion. But if I don’t use Aero I don’t get thumbnail previews and other goodies. Why is that? I asked around and didn’t get a satisfying answer. The most common was “you must move on to the modern style”. Modern? I think not.

There is no reason (in my humble opinion) to remove thumbnail previews and other features in the “Classic” them. Why can’t I use the Classic theme and have thumbnail previews at the same time?

If anyone has a good answer, I’ll be happy to get it.

thumbnail previews are provided by the DMW which is integral part of the AERO experience. It store the current visual representation on the windows so they can be either displayed as thumbnail or task switch in either CTRL+Tab or WIN+TAB.

When turning off the AERO the DMW is turned off also, as most people turn the AERO due to preformence problems this is reasonable.

In Win7 you can create a new Theme with the look and feel of classic but the usage of AERO, there are couple of theme designers for Win7 that availble on the net.

True. Still, I would expect this to be available out of the box.

Every time I see Pavel working on his laptop, a question pops into my head: Why don’t you use the Aero

I'm not on a Vista or Win7 box at the moment but if you go into folder settings you can enable thumbnails. I can't remember what its called but its in the same list of checkboxes that allows you to show or hide file extensions.
