Team System 2008 SP1 Virtual PC/Virtual Server and Hyper-V images are live

Brian Randell just announced about his holiday surprise: New Virtual PC/Server and Hyper-V images with VSTS and TFS and a 12/31/2009 expiration date.

As part of the refresh and extending the expiration date, Brian have updated the images to include the following (naturally some items only appear in the “all-up” images):

  • the latest virtual machine additions or integration services components
  • all of the latest Windows Updates as of December 1, 2008
  • Team Foundation Server 2008 SP1
  • Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite SP1
  • Team System Web Access 2008 SP1
  • Team Foundation Power Tools, October 2008 update
  • the latest MSSCCI provider
  • Team Explorer 2005 (this allows you to work with TFS from Visual Studio 2005 which is installed so that you can edit and customize TFS reports)
  • the GDR for the product formally known as Visual Studio 2008 Database Edition (aka Data Dude)
  • current Process Explorer, Process Monitor, and Background Info

Visual Studio 2010 Lab Management

The CTP of Visual Studio 2010 was announced at PDC. One of the coolest features in Visual Studio 2010 is the Lab Management.

Lab Management leverages virtualization to enable software development and test teams to build higher quality apps. Lab management accelerates setup/tear down time and eliminates no-repro bugs by creating better integration across dev and test teams throughout the application lifecycle.

Did you know that:

  • 30% of testing time is spent in setting up machines and labs
  • Under 30% utilization of test and dev assets
  • “No Repro” bugs often slip into production impacting project success

Lab Management leverages virtualization and allows multiple checkpoints to be created across lab environments (consisting of multiple VMs). Since the checkpoints are part of the same image as opposed to having to clone at every state snapshot, that reduces the proliferation. In addition, lab management ties the environments to the notion of a project which allows the lab administrator to clean up the images as projects are completed.

Lab Management is built on top of System Center Virtual Machine Manager, and thanks to SCVMM managing VMs on multiple hypervisors, Lab Management supports both Hyper-V and VMware ESX out of the box.

Goodbye MVP – Hello DPE

Yes.. It was only two and a half months ago when I wrote about receiving my Microsoft MVP award. I was quite honored to receive this award.

Today I joined Microsoft Israel to the Developer & Platform Evangelism Group. Unfortunately it means that I’ll no longer be an MVP.

My official job title will be Developer Evangelist which means that I will help customers to choose the best technologies that Microsoft offer.

Many who know me, know that I pretty much talk tech to anyone who’ll listen and that I’m very passionate about it. My professional career has been focused around Microsoft technologies for the past 10 years so, needless to say, I feel like this is the perfect role for me.

Finally, What about this blog? don’t worry, I’m not going to stop blogging. It’ll be more interesting…Not only Team System blogging, but also .NET and every cool technology that Microsoft have.

Shay will be visiting Israel at the end of December and very happy to talk in the user group. Shay will talk about the new Microsoft Lab Management and Visual Studio 2010.

דרך חדשה

לאחר קצת פחות משלוש שנים אני יוצא לדרך חדשה.

יוצא לדרך חדשה ולא עוזב, כי משפחה לא עוזבים. חברת SRL היוותה משפחה שניה שלי בשנים האחרונות.

ההחלטה לא היתה קלה. SRL זו חברה שקל לאהוב, חברה שקל להתאהב בה, חברה שכיף לעבוד בה. התמורות שעובד עובר בחברה הן מדהימות. אני תמיד אומר שניתן להקביל את SRL לטרנספורמטור: אתה נכנס אדם מסוים ויוצא אדם אחר לגמרי.

הגעתי ל SRL אחרי תפקיד פיתוח ור"צ כדי להיות יועץ דוט נט ו Team System. העבודה בסביבה כ"כ מאתגרת, מקצועית ושואפת למצויינות כ"כ התאימה לי... עם הזמן גיליתי מה שיש ל SRL להציע: פלטפורמה אדירה לעובדים ללמוד, להתקדם, להצליח ולהוביל. החברה מעודדת אותך כל הזמן למצוינות ואינה מפחדת מזה.
כמות האתגרים המקצועיים והאישיים אותם חוויתי במשך הזמן הזה היא אדירה. אין יום אחד שזהה לקודמו. עבודה אינטנסיבית ומאתגרת ברמות שקשה לתאר. אבל אתה אף פעם לא לבד. כמו האימרה הידועה של ליברפול (שאני ממש לא אוהד שלה, אני אוהד של מילאן...) "לעולם לא תצעדי לבד" – כך גם ב SRL: אף פעם אתה לא לבד. תמיד יש מי שיעזור לך, תמיד ימצא מישהו שיוכל לתת לך את הכיוון לפתרון הבעיה.
כל הדברים הללו עזרו לי להגיע להישגים בלתי מבוטלים בזמן הקצר הזה כשהשיא היה בקבלת MVP של מייקרוסופט לפני חודשיים. לבד אתה לא יכול להשיג כלום. השלם תמיד גדול מסכום חלקיו! וכשיש מאחוריך גב שדוחף – הכל נהיה קל יותר.

אז מדוע אני יוצא לדרך חדשה? אתגרים חדשים, תפקיד חדש ועוד. באחד הפוסטים הקרובים אספר מה אני הולך לעשות במייקרוסופט ישראל.


חרף הגשמת החלום אני יוצא עם דמעה. דמעה מפני שקשה מאוד לעזוב את הבית. גם חתן ביום נישואיו חש התרגשות ופחד מהלא נודע על כך שעוזב את הקן בו גדל למרות שחיים חדשים בפתח מלאי התרגשות ועוצמה משלהם.

יש מספר אנשים שאני חייב להזכיר בפוסט הזה:

מיכל לוי – האישה האחת והיחידה! מנהלת מדהימה. אישה שהיא מנגנון שימור עובדים מהלך. אין הרבה אנשים כמוה. מקשיבה, חכמה. מיכל עוד ראיינה אותי ל SRL בגלגול קודם – לפני שחתמתי בחברה הקודמת. רצה הגורל ובסוף כן עבדתי אצלה. תודה לאל!! מיכל יודעת להציב אתגרים, להקשות בשאלות ותמיד יודעת למצוא את הדרך לגרום לך להיות מרוצה ובו בזמן גם להיות חברה שלך. מיכל, אין עליך!
שרית תמיר –בולדוזרית בכל רמ"ח איבריה. לימדה אותי מה זה לקוחות ואיך לעבוד איתם. אשת עבודה אמיתית.

אז מתי אני יוצא למסע? באמצע חודש זה (דצמבר). את הרצאתי ב Developer Academy 3 אעביר כעובד SRL ועל זה לא הייתי מוכן לוותר.

The December Meeting Of The Israeli ALM User Group

The December meeting of the Israeli ALM user group in Microsoft will deal with the facsanating subject of Agile Development and the steps that a software organization should implement to achive the transition.

 The group meets on the second Monday of each month (on December, second Monday is the 8th) in the Dekel hall in Microsoft offices in Ra'anana. Meetings start on 17:30.
