Installing MOSS 2007 Infrastructure Update

Overview

This week I installed the latest update for SharePoint called Infrastructure update on few machines.

I tried to understand how to install it by reading the official article from Microsoft  “Install the Infrastructure Update for Microsoft Office Servers” but unfortunately there is lack of information.

Therefore, here are the Installation Steps:

1.       Stop the World Wide Web publishing service on the server to disconnect users from the farm.

2.       Download and Install the Infrastructure Update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (KB951695)
at the end of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 update, do not run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.

3.       Download and Install the Infrastructure Update for Microsoft Office Servers (KB951297)
at the end of the update installation, the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard starts:

a.       Click “Next” on the welcome page.

b.      In the dialog box that notifies you that some services might need to be restarted during configuration, click “Yes”.

c.       On the Completing the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard page, click “Next”.

 Improvements in current update:

·         New Enterprise Search Features - Federated Search capability, a unified administration dashboard and several Search core platform performance updates.

·         Content Deployment Updates

·         Usability and performance updates

·         Focus on several core platform components - improvements to upgrade, future patching and servicing, workflow, the BDC and farm authentication.

Deploy a Solution Failed in a MOSS 2007 Front-Ends Farm

I came across with some problem occurs in a development environment based on front-end servers. When I tried to deploy one or more solutions to my SharePoint sites or only to one, by Visual Studio 2005 using VSeWSS or The GUI (Central Administration), I received an error message on "Status" criteria at "Solution Management" page. In this situation, one of the front-ends was down. Some investigation shows that you can’t deploy solutions when you have unavailable front-ends in the farm.

Additionally, solution deployment fails time after time, and timer job is created and not running. For solving this problem, you should warm up all the front-ends or to remove the unnecessary from server farm page. Be aware.
