Opinion: Interview Questions

Eyal had recently been publishing interview questions. You can read all about them here.

When I was a junior developer, I went to some interviews that asked me questions similar to Eyal's questions. In some cases I knew the answer, in other cases I knew part of the answer and sometimes I did not know the answer at all.

Does it mean I am not a good developer?

Does it say something about me?

Am I not good enough?

At the time, it made me question my capabilities. After bad interview I did not have much confident at myself. Since those times I have grew and learned. I had evolved as a Developer, Architect,  Project Manager, CTO, Consultant and etc.

Speaking for experience, I must say that those interview questions really guaranty nothing. When I interview someone, I usually use a more common scenario and questions that are relevant to the current project we are working on. For instance, if we are developing a web application, I would ask for a simple web application that is connected to the database and displays something.

Having said that, in some cases those tricky questions will be valid but most of the time I prefer not using them. Instead, talk to the candidate, hear what he has to say and just "flow" with his knowledge and capabilities.

In my opinion, each candidate has different potential. You should not always use the same "template" and questions for each candidate.

What do you think?

My favorite question is: "What new thing have you learned in the last month? Explain that to me". And then, I keep asking about that new thing.

I think the most critical quality for a dev in those days is an ability and a passion for learning new stuff.

I care less about a person's knowledge about viewstate encryption algorithm (none... ha-ha :)), than his or her desire to discover it.

Here is my idea about hiring process:

I agree with guy 100%.

what you sould seek in the interview is potential and not technical skils.

Test the way your applicant can learn new stuff by asking him a question about a subject he doesnt know, and watch how he is handling this mission.

I had recently interviewed for a graduate position. I could not ask too much technical questions as the candidates lacked the knowledge so I had to use some questions similar to Eyal's. However I would not leave the room for X minutes failing whoever was stuck. I gave them hints when required and my main goal was to see if they understand the hints. I also displayed to them different solutions and asked which is more efficient and etc.

I agree that the discussion and the general impression are more important then a super fast answer. Moreover, the people who shoot answers very quickly are in many cases people who had a lot of interviews and learned these questions by heart.
