Using Speech Recognition to Program in Microsoft Visual Studio
08 June 09 12:20 AM | JackieG | 1 comment(s)
We have just posted a very cool video showing off some of the work we have been doing with Voice Recognition. At Renaissance, we try to allocate time for our developers to explore new tools and technologies that are not necessarily related to their current projects. This speech application is the result of one such project developed by Kim Major ( http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/kim ). The video ( http://www.renaissance.co.il/VSSpeech.aspx ) offers a glimpse of our thinking and early implementation...

UPDATE #2:  Thanks to the comment by Tony, making 2 simple changes to the code eliminates the need for step (3) below. I’ve commented out the line Set oOutlookApp = GetObject(, "Outlook.Application") and changed Set olNS = oOutlookApp.GetNamespace("MAPI")                to ' By following change eliminates the security access prompts! 'Set olNS = oOutlookApp.GetNamespace("MAPI") Set olNS...

This month we take a look at design and architecture, rather than specific technologies. Konstantin Triger, a Senior Consultant at Sela, will take a look at the deadly sins of performance, particularly from the design perspective.  It is important to remember that low-level implementation details are irrelevant if the high-end design accounts for 90% of the bottlenecks in the final product.  This session will help to make correct performance related decisions during design phase and will...
Looking at .NET - From Both Sides Now

Usually when we talk about comparing VB and C#, it is in the context of trying to show which language is better.  However, here is a different approach – a pair of articles that explain nuances of one language for developers who normally program in the other language.  A great first step towards understanding and “playing nicely together” :-) What C# Devs Should Know About VB What VB Devs Should Know About C# Cross Posted from http://weblogs.asp.net/jackieg/

This month we return to take a look at some of the web development technologies from Microsoft - Dynamic Data Controls (DDC) and Model View Controller (MVC). The new technology of ASP.NET DDC (Dynamic Data Controls) help us to build a presentation layer based on a data scheme in just a few minutes, and helps the developer and the architect to build a model based application that is scalable and easy to maintain. In the second session, we will build an ASP.NET applications based on the new MVC Framework...

Bill Gates and Microsoft - Historical Moments
29 July 08 05:06 AM | JackieG | with no comments
The big news in the software industry this past month has been the departure of Bill Gates from involvement in day to day activity at Microsoft. The following two videos, while not necessarily humorous, should still bring a smile to your face. They may serve as an inspiration as well. Looking Back, Moving Ahead - This 15-minute video is a very human look at the history of Bill Gates and Microsoft. Worth a Thousand Words - We’ve all seen the famous picture of the original eleven goofy-looking members...

June 2008 Meeting of Israel Visual Basic User Group (IVBUG)
29 May 08 09:22 PM | JackieG | with no comments
One of the most important new technologies for .NET, that we haven’t really covered in any of our IVBUG meetings, is WPF – Windows Presentation Foundation. WPF is the next-generation presentation sub-system for Windows applications. It provides both developers and designers with a unified programming model for building rich Windows smart client user experiences (and is the basis of Silverlight for Web applications) that incorporate UI, media, and documents. In the first part of his presentation,...

Notes on TechEd Israel 2008
18 April 08 11:42 AM | JackieG | with no comments
Last week was the (now) semi-annual TechEd Israel conference. This was my sixth time participating in this event - I have given presentations at all six TechEds here. The conference is an amazing experience and has come a long way from 2000/2001 when we had to lobby Microsoft Israel to put on such an event. There were about 3,500 participants - about half the amount of TechEd EMEA for all of Europe! The attendees enjoyed most of the sessions/speakers and the speakers enjoyed the interactions and...
