Predictions for 2010 #2 – Three MS Technologies to Watch in 2010
05 February 10 03:34 AM | JackieG | 2 comment(s)
While we can expect a lot of excitement, attention, and noise around the April release of VS 2010 and .NET 4, there are a few other strategic (i.e. longer term) technologies that I think we need to be paying attention to as well: 1. Windows Azure – Scalable Cloud Computing is all the rage these days (for many good reasons). Microsoft’s platform is not only compelling, but has also evolved to address many “real-world” issues. The offering goes live this month. 2. Silverlight 4 – Silverlight has come...
Predictions for 2010 #1 – ASP.NET MVC Goes Mainstream
26 January 10 09:19 AM | JackieG | 1 comment(s)
While originally an “interesting” technology for the fringe of ASP.NET developers, the Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework is clearly destined to become mainstream. Version 2.0 will be included as part of VS 2010 / .NET 4 and has smoothed some of the rough edges of the initial release. One of the questions we have been struggling with at Renaissance is what browser development technologies to focus on for our in-house and client projects. Apparently we are not alone – I attended an audience-participation...

MSDN Screencast Library

The MSDN team over in the UK has put together a huge collection (279 at the time of this post) of short screencasts for .NET developers.  Each video is only about 10-15 minutes long, but packs a lot of useful information.  Here is the full List of Screencasts . From the home page: Don't have the time to read a 10-page how-to article or watch a full length webcast? Try an MSDN screencast, a webcast that takes you step-by-step to discovering new functionality or exploring a hot developer...

Infragistics has just launched an interesting site for UI designers at http://quince.infragistics.com Now that that the concept and need of design patterns for software architects and programmers is pretty much mainstream, it is time to develop a similar body of knowledge for the UI designer and developer. Infragistics’ Quince site is a very informative and visual collection of different UI/UX design patterns that can be browsed and filtered in various ways. It is a good tool to help you focus your...

This month we return to take a look at some of the web development technologies from Microsoft - Dynamic Data Controls (DDC) and Model View Controller (MVC). The new technology of ASP.NET DDC (Dynamic Data Controls) help us to build a presentation layer based on a data scheme in just a few minutes, and helps the developer and the architect to build a model based application that is scalable and easy to maintain. In the second session, we will build an ASP.NET applications based on the new MVC Framework...

Mashups For The Masses !
30 May 07 03:06 PM | JackieG | with no comments
As I have mentioned previously , I have recently been researching and playing with mashups and various sources of online data sources, such as Windows Live . Well, this is obviously something that has caught wider interest in Microsoft as well, as they recently released an alpha version of a tool/technology called "Popfly" ( http://www.popfly.com/ ). This is a very cool, visual and interactive tool, for combining various building blocks and data sources, to build your own mashups, without all of...
Progress Notification for Web Service Calls
30 May 07 02:33 PM | JackieG | with no comments
In one of our current projects, we had a need to provide progress indication for web service calls that could take a long time to execute (by design - alot of data being transferred). It turns out that this is a perfect scenario for using SOAP extensions, in order to get into the processing pipeline and provide the necessary information. Kim Major , our senior developer, wrote a great article that clearly explains and shows how to do this. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Impressions From Mix 07

As I am working my way back home from the MIX 07 conference, I have had time to reflect on the conference and whether it was a good use of my time and money: I did not attend MIX last year, but very much enjoyed and benefited from it this year. I actually walked away with it having exceeded my expectations – but given how many conferences I attend and speak at over the course of a year, I am somewhat jaded and my level of expectations is not that high J Here are some specific comments, in no particular...
