Assigning more than 2 site collection administrators

Posted Thursday, January 17, 2008 1:07 PM by Itay Shakury

This one may sound trivial to anyone who is more than beginning with SharePoint. But it seems to be a reappearing issue, so I guess it's worth blogging.

SharePoint Central Administration's has a page that allows you to select site collection administrator, you are prompted to specify a site collection administrator, and optionally a secondary administrator.

assign SC admin

But there is no reason why you won't have more than tow administrators for a site collection.
Go to the site collection settings page, and click on Site collection administrators. (or open the following page: http://YourSite/_layouts/mngsiteadmin.aspx)

settings_scadmins

Now add as many users as you wish, separated with semicolons.

Simple huh?

I believe there is a small difference between the two sets of administrators.  The ones defined in Central Admin are the only ones who can delete the whole site collection?

In order to delete site collections through the Central admin interface you have to be a member of the Farm administrators group, even if you are not the site collection's admin.

Can I assign a group to the site collection administrator?

There is a difference between the two sets of administrators but i don't know the exact differences. Can anyone tell me the difference?

You can't assign a group to the site collection administrators. You have to use policies on a higher level for this.

I did not say they are the same.

But for the purpose of quickly giving someone administrative permissions over a site, and you don't want him as your primary\secondary site collection administrator, you can use this setting.

is it possible to create a new Active Directory group, add users to that group, then add that newly created group as the secondary user?

is it possible to use an Active Directory group as the secondary admin? Everytime I try to add a group to the admin list, I get an error 'not found'

Hi Ian,

The description sais: "Enter users seperated by semicolon", so I guess not..You can use the method I suggest in the post instead.

Hi, thanks for the post!!, I have added a secondary site collection admin and a third and forth using the method described above. however when i try to use stsadm -o adduser i get an access denied message. why is it i can give site collection admin rights via the GUI however when i try to perform the same action via stsadm iI get access denied ? I am logged on as the same user (mydomain\spsetupuser) ni both cases

Being a site collection admin does not suddenly give you farm admin rights. To run stsadm you require much higher clearance, as well as direct access to the servers.

Why on earth would you add a tertiary SC admin and then have them use stsadm to run simple adduser operations?? That's what the GUI is for! :)
