If you're restoring to the same host, no problems; but I've heard that you cannot restore a Hyper-V vhd to a different host because of problems with the GUID. The GUID of the host server is written throughout the registry of the virtual servers.

Thank you for the comment. I haven't compared Bitlocker with other technologies as this wasn't the goal of this specific post.

On the other hand, without comparing the products at a technical level, I can say that Bitlocker has one major advantage:it's included in the price of the OS license. You don't have to persuade your CFO because you already have it.

As for key recovery, since we have been using the technology for almost an year now, we have not seen it difficult. You either recover the key from AD or from a safe external storage.

What would you say are the major advantages and disavantages of Botlocker vs. Safeboot and Guardianedge or others like Utimaco and PGP.

Some of them are obvious like:

Installation and management is a lot harder with Bitlocker. Its OS dependent (only higher versions of Vista are supported).

Key Managment and Key escrow almost non-existent. Key recovery is so difficult that you might as well forget-it-about-it
