Enhancing Analysis 2005 Security - Revoking Domain Admin and Local Admin from Built in Admin role

  • General
By default Analysis 2005 sets the following accounts as server administrators:

Local Admin Group

Service Log-on account

To enhance analysis security, it's often requested to alter default policy by dropping domain and local admin account from server administrator role. This post describe the proper steps to perform in order to complete that task

  • Warning
The following procedure would result dropping Local and domain administrator from the predefined Analysis Server Admin role. However it's not possible to block the local admin and/or domain admin from adding their logon to the server specific admin list. Once done, they would resume server administrator effective rights by the virtue of their own account rather than by prefixed role.

It's a good procedure to ensure strict corporate audit on that issue!

  • Procedure

1. Using the SQL Server management studio connect to the analysis server.

2. Right click the server instance name and choose security tab from the properties option

3. Add the genuine server administrator group (The assigned administrator group of the server)

4. Click Ok

5. Using the General tab click the "Show Advanced (All) Properties" checkbox.

6. Page through the properties window until reaching "Security\BuiltinAdminsAreServerAdmins"

7. Change the value to "false"

8. Verify that you have completed successfully steps 3-4 prior to that phase!!

9. Please verify that Analysis Server Service Log-On was set to an account other than local admin

or domain admin. (do not change the "Security\ServiceAccountIsServerAdmin").

Enjoy :-)

Exposing ProClarity Toolbar with PPS Monitoring ProClarity Report Type

 ProclarityToolbar

Cute & simple, How?

ProClarity report type uses few pages the main page is "PDefaultPage.asp".
This page implements URL access but redirect to another page.
So, we need to change the behavior to proClarity main page which is "ProClarity.asp".
Do the following steps in PAS directory (Default location: "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\PAS").

1. Save a copy of PDefaultPage.asp (for rolling back...) and delete the PDefaultPage.asp.
2. Make a copy of Proclarity.asp
3. Rename the Proclarity.asp (the new Copy) to PDefaultPage.asp
4. Add new ProClarity Report Type , in the Configuration option enter the following value: "tb;fs;"

"tb;fs;" (Semicolon also at End - Thanks to AJ Mee)

Parameters

Publish The Dashboard page and the result is :

Proclarity

Enjoy :) And BeI

TechEd2008 (Israel) = {SQL Server 2008} Happen {Here}

From time to time I have so much to write about, that I just don't know where to start.

I've been Struggling myself for quit some time about what would be the appropriate begging entry at my co-shared blog with Yossi Elkayam.

Microsoft new launch wave of the Next generation platforms ("Heroes happen here"). Was one candidate, however as the content for TechEd2008 was beginning to clarify, it was obvious that {SQL Server 2008} actually happens there.

TechEd 2008 (Israel) which is going to take place on April 6-8, In Eilat. With Visual studio 2008, Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 as content, It's the biggest event of the year. And seats are rapidly selling out; there might still be some room so hurry up!  At the upcoming conference, I will be speaking about Core services as we explore the new SSAS 2008 tweaks, going through Performance Point Server Unplugged for developers, and concluding with Excel Services as a web service component.I'm just about to finalize with final notes, topics and demos That would be addressed.

During the following weeks I'll upload short previews as well as long anticipated documents on deep developing issues regarding Performance Point server and General BI Stuff.

I hope we all have fun together, and stay tuned,

Eran
