BI Semantic Model – the new solution for SSAS and PowerPivot
TechEd North America 2011 wrapped up last week with big news about PowerPivot and SSAS. Just in case you haven't read it already somewhere else, I'll give you a very short re-cap. In SQL Server 2005, the UDM was supposed to encapsulate the solution for modeling your project. In SQL Server 11, codename Denali, it's going to be replaced by BISM - the Business Intelligence Semantic Model. All the reporting tools in the Microsoft BI Stack will work against this model. In Denali, you will...
The pros and cons of Report Builder 3.0 over Report Builder 1.0
So yes, I'm still thinking about RB 1.0 vs. RB 3.0 . We've made the move a few months ago from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2 . Most of our projects in the team, if they're not cubes, are Report Builder 1.0 models. I was really looking forward to seeing how we can move our users from Report Builder 1.0 to Report Builder 3.0 . My conclusion? Except for a few very specific cases - we can't. We actually still have Report Builder 1.0 as a click once application from our Report...
Building Effective data visualizations in Reporting Services 2008 R2
This is a live post from the session of Ronen Chen at Tech Ed Israel 2010 . New to report builder 3.0 - we can be in local mode or server mode. We can check it in relation to performance on the server and save in directly on the server (rather than on my PC). Zooming and moving my map is only possible during the design of the report. We cannot zoom in on it after running the report. A zoom in is possible through an action in the report which will create the zoom in a new report. Avoid embedding maps...
Amir Netz and Ariel Netz Talk on PowerPivot, DAX, Report Builder and PivotViewer
Ok, so the unexpected happened - about a month and a half after interviewing Mr. Donald Farmer , I got to interview Mr. Amir Netz and Mr. Ariel Netz ! I know!... You probably remember Mr. Amir Netz from his appearance in the recent keynote session in the BI conference in New Orleans. He spoke about what's going to be new in PowerPivot. When I heard he was coming to Israel for a conference discussing Panorama and PowerPivot , I decided I'd try to get a few more tidbits from him... In the keynote...
Dividing by zero when creating a fraction as a calculated field
I found myself recently trying to remember how a formula I wrote a few months ago in Report Builder. Doing the same thing twice, made me think I should put it on the blog, so that next time I won't need to remember it... A user complained a report in report builder didn't run for her, as she divided two measures and the report would error when the denominator would equal zero. The error message she got was: Semantic query execution failed. Divide by zero error encountered. --------------...
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Feature Pack Download
Hot off the press! I just read on Teo Lachev's blog that Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Feature Pack RTM - ed. Yeah, I know! I have to admit this is also slightly amusing for me, as just this morning I asked a Microsoft consultant if he knew when it's suppose to drop... So you know what this means, you can now download a standalone version of Report Builder 3.0, PowerPivot for Excel and Data Mining Add-ins for Office 2007. Each can be downloaded by itself or as a whole package. If you're...
Report Builder 1.0 vs. Report Builder 3.0
The municipality has been planning to move to SQL Server 2008 R2 . Now obviously I'm happy about it, but it also made me wonder about our Report Builder 1.0 models. I know Report Builder 3.0 doesn't have all the functionality that Report Builder 1.0 has. In some ways Report Builder 3.0 outdoes version 1.0 and in other ways it's lacking. I was deliberating on how the move of upgrading to SQL Server 2008 R2 may affect us in the municipality. I mean, does that make our Report Models from...
SQL Server 2008 R2 Released
Well I guess the rumors had it right, because the first day of PASS Europe , Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing of SQL Server 2008 R2 . The main attraction, for me at least, will be PowerPivot (and DAX) and Report Builder 3.0 (with its shared datasets, maps and new calculations). Now, if you have a one track mind like me, first thing you would look for is SQL Server 2008 R2 Express editions, or in plain English - the free versions! Well, if you live in the US, then look no further my...
Microsoft All UP BI Demo version 9.2
I knew from Russell Christopher's blog that Microsoft All UP BI Demo version 9.2 was released to partners , but as I'm not a registered partner, that didn't help me much... So I was delighted to discover today from the RDA blog that "Microsoft has configured a remote server for general public to get hands on experience with this new BI version 9.2 solution" - so yes, you can take that baby off for a spin! You need to register to the site first, run a .exe to enable the ActiveX...
SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP1
Microsoft has released today SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP1 (formerly known as Kilimanjaro ) to the general public after it was available for two days already to TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Except for adding more features to help DBAs and developers work against the databases, SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP1also offers Report Builder 3.0. Yes, it’s true, you just blinked and already Microsoft has released a new version to Report Builder. The enhanced visualization from Dundas gages and charts is still there and...
