Introduction to DAX basics
As SQL Server 2012 and PowerPivot v2 release is getting closer and closer, knowing DAX becomes more of a necessity than a just an option. Via Kasper de Jonge ’s blog I had learned of a nice 30 minutes Introduction to DAX basics . You can download an example workbook and try your hand at creating a measure formula and adding up to adding filter context to your formula. The post also had a ling to the TechNet Wiki page for the DAX Resource Center which has loads of articles, downloads and videos, along...
SQL Server 2012 Denali Release Date
I was in the BI User Group meeting today (and if you're in Israel, why didn't you come too?) and heard something quite exciting. The speaker was Yossi Elkayam from Microsoft Israel and what he mentioned twice was that the release date for SQL Server 2012 Denali is March 2012. He was saying that while stating next month's meeting will preview the new release scheduled for the month after that. He also mentioned that PowerPivot version 2 will be released in proximity to the release of SQL...
BI Semantic Model – the new solution for SSAS and PowerPivot
TechEd North America 2011 wrapped up last week with big news about PowerPivot and SSAS. Just in case you haven't read it already somewhere else, I'll give you a very short re-cap. In SQL Server 2005, the UDM was supposed to encapsulate the solution for modeling your project. In SQL Server 11, codename Denali, it's going to be replaced by BISM - the Business Intelligence Semantic Model. All the reporting tools in the Microsoft BI Stack will work against this model. In Denali, you will...
Amir Netz and Ariel Netz Talk on PowerPivot, DAX, Report Builder and PivotViewer
Ok, so the unexpected happened - about a month and a half after interviewing Mr. Donald Farmer , I got to interview Mr. Amir Netz and Mr. Ariel Netz ! I know!... You probably remember Mr. Amir Netz from his appearance in the recent keynote session in the BI conference in New Orleans. He spoke about what's going to be new in PowerPivot. When I heard he was coming to Israel for a conference discussing Panorama and PowerPivot , I decided I'd try to get a few more tidbits from him... In the keynote...
PowerPivot and Panorama Nova View
Mr. Amir Netz , Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft, came to lecture about Self - Service BI and Panorama, along with Kobi Averbuch , VP of R&D at Panorama . These are a few of the major points in their lecture: PowerPivot IT cannot meet all demands. People will try to find a solution themselves. We need a technology to bridge the gap. How to build a PowerPivot application We start by installing the PowerPivot add - in. PowerPivot runs in - memory using the Vertipaq engine that ensures quick...
New videos and slides on SQL Server 2008 R2 and PowerPivot
Two big resources on SQL Server 2008 R2 and PowerPivot just came out lately. The first is the videos and slides from BI track in TechEd 2010 in New Orleans. You can download all the slides and video recordings on the sessions that you want (and you can use the "list" view for quick and easy access). This one is free for everyone. Another resource that is free, but requires registration, is 24 Hours of PASS . Registration to PASS is free and very recommended as it gives you access to a lot...
Donald Farmer on SQL Server 2008 R2, SharePoint and PowerPivot
If you're following this blog, then you know that Sunday, May 30 th 2010, I went to the SQL & BI Data Platform convention held in Tel Aviv. Specifically, I went to Mr. Donald Farmer 's seminar on Data Integration in Large Organizations . I did live blogging from most of the event, though actually, I didn't manage to blog about the last part of it, because I was preparing for something that was pretty big for me.... I'll start over. When I first heard Mr. Farmer was coming to lecture...
BI capabilities in Office 2010 – SharePoint, Excel and Project
Office 2010 RTM - ed on the end of April. You probably heard already about PowerPivot and Excel 2010. And of course there's also SharePoint 2010 which has Excel Services, Visio Services, Access Services, PerformancePoint Services and PowerPivot integration. Still, that doesn't make for the entire BI scope in Office 2010. I have just recently learned that there are BI capabilities in Project Server 2010 . Going deeper I have learned that there were already such capabilities in Project Server...
SQL Server 2008 R2 Released
Well I guess the rumors had it right, because the first day of PASS Europe , Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing of SQL Server 2008 R2 . The main attraction, for me at least, will be PowerPivot (and DAX) and Report Builder 3.0 (with its shared datasets, maps and new calculations). Now, if you have a one track mind like me, first thing you would look for is SQL Server 2008 R2 Express editions, or in plain English - the free versions! Well, if you live in the US, then look no further my...
Microsoft All UP BI Demo version 9.2
I knew from Russell Christopher's blog that Microsoft All UP BI Demo version 9.2 was released to partners , but as I'm not a registered partner, that didn't help me much... So I was delighted to discover today from the RDA blog that "Microsoft has configured a remote server for general public to get hands on experience with this new BI version 9.2 solution" - so yes, you can take that baby off for a spin! You need to register to the site first, run a .exe to enable the ActiveX...
Panorama now integrates with PowerPivot and SharePoint 2010
A while ago, I saw Panorama was advertising a webcast detailing how Panorama gives a complete solution for the entire Microsoft BI platform , including PowerPivot . I have to admit, just seeing Panorama and PowerPivot in the same sentence seemed odd to me, as PowerPivot seemed like a completely full solution for its purpose. I didn't see what Panorama had to add to the equation. And so I began asking Panorama a few questions... So where does Panorama offer any added value? Well, if your organization...
PowerPivot מהווה סוג של mid tier בין Excel Services ל AS Engine מבחינת ה SharePoint.
Microsoft Business Intelligence Roadshow:
Free Virtual Conference on PowerPivot with Donald Farmer
Just in case you haven’t heard of them till now, SQL Server Worldwide Users Group (or SSWUG ) hosts a great deal of information about all sorts of platforms – be it SQL Server, Oracle systems, MySQL etc. They also have a forum for your questions and a script library for your use. So why have I been talking on SSWUG? Because though they are hosting an event on PowerPivot (which I’ll talk about shortly), I think you should also consider them for additional information. And now – to PowerPivot ! You...
SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP
Microsoft just released SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP. The November CTP is "feature complete" so this should be close to the real thing, before they ship SQL Server 2008 R2 in 2010. I guess you could tell from the news coming from PASS that this would be in the wings. First of all, there was word that the next CTP would be delivered during November (which translates to: now!) and secondly, projects that before would be code named - now have their formal name. Madison is now Parallel Data...
