Free eBooks on SQL Server, SharePoint, Office and more
So the price is still right - and yes, it's free! Marina my colleague from work sent me a really great link so obviously I had to share it with all of you. In his blog about Microsoft SMS&P Partner Community Blog , Mr. Eric Ligman has published a very extensive list of free Microsoft eBooks on SharePoint, Visual Studio, Windows Phone, Windows 8, Office 365, Office 2010, SQL Server 2012, Azure, and more. The list is very comprehensive and I recommend you go over it and also look at the additional...

SQL Server 2012 Denali Release Date
I was in the BI User Group meeting today (and if you're in Israel, why didn't you come too?) and heard something quite exciting. The speaker was Yossi Elkayam from Microsoft Israel and what he mentioned twice was that the release date for SQL Server 2012 Denali is March 2012. He was saying that while stating next month's meeting will preview the new release scheduled for the month after that. He also mentioned that PowerPivot version 2 will be released in proximity to the release of SQL...
#SQLFamily – putting a little love in your heart
I don't know if you've noticed it, but I don't blog all that much lately (I know blog, I know - but that doesn't mean I don't love you!). So as you may gather that if I do blog, it must be something that seems important to me. The SQL Server Team has recently blogged about an initiative they're doing with the Pragmatic Works Foundation . Pragmatic Works Foundation is a non-profit that provides free technical training to veterans, the jobless, and underemployed. In 2012 they're...
SSAS and SSRS in SQL Server 2011
Don't know if you're aware of it, but Microsoft just rocked your world! I remember interviewing Mr. Ariel Netz , Product Unit Manager for SSRS. I wanted to hear from him what's planned for Report Builder 1.0 as I didn't feel like Report Builder 3.0 covered all the functionality that was in 1.0. I also wondered what sort of answer we will get for ad - hoc reporting against SSAS in SSRS. Mr. Netz said as much as he could I guess, as things were still under NDA. And now the future of...
New videos and slides on SQL Server 2008 R2 and PowerPivot
Two big resources on SQL Server 2008 R2 and PowerPivot just came out lately. The first is the videos and slides from BI track in TechEd 2010 in New Orleans. You can download all the slides and video recordings on the sessions that you want (and you can use the "list" view for quick and easy access). This one is free for everyone. Another resource that is free, but requires registration, is 24 Hours of PASS . Registration to PASS is free and very recommended as it gives you access to a lot...
SSIS 2008 Performance and Scalability
This is continued live blogging from the Donald Farmer seminar from the SQL & BI convention in Tel Aviv of Data Integration in Large Organizations. SSIS 2008 Performance and Scalability The importance of measuring to improve performance Understand and measure hardware: How many CPU cores? How much memory? How fast is the I\O subsystem? Understand the potential bottlenecks: Understand the limits of the Source System (usually a bottleneck as it's usually slower than the new system) Gains from...
SSIS 2008 improvements over SSIS 2005
This is continued live blogging from the Donald Farmer seminar from the SQL & BI convention in Tel Aviv of Data Integration in Large Organizations. SSIS 2008 improvements over SSIS 2005 C# scripting can reference all .net assemblies VSA replaced by VSTA Pipeline Scale Up Tuning SSIS through looking at the buffers on the Data Flow. In SSIS 2005 you would add buffers and break up flows SSIS Tip: Tools > Options > BI Designers > IS Designers: Control Flow Data Connect Data Flow Data Connect...

SQL Server 2008 R2 Released
Well I guess the rumors had it right, because the first day of PASS Europe , Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing of SQL Server 2008 R2 . The main attraction, for me at least, will be PowerPivot (and DAX) and Report Builder 3.0 (with its shared datasets, maps and new calculations). Now, if you have a one track mind like me, first thing you would look for is SQL Server 2008 R2 Express editions, or in plain English - the free versions! Well, if you live in the US, then look no further my...
Microsoft All UP BI Demo version 9.2
I knew from Russell Christopher's blog that Microsoft All UP BI Demo version 9.2 was released to partners , but as I'm not a registered partner, that didn't help me much... So I was delighted to discover today from the RDA blog that "Microsoft has configured a remote server for general public to get hands on experience with this new BI version 9.2 solution" - so yes, you can take that baby off for a spin! You need to register to the site first, run a .exe to enable the ActiveX...

Can't see all the rows in your drillthrough report in report builder?
I'm developing a report model in Report Builder 1.0 at the moment. I felt like it was finished and started testing the model with some sample reports I knew my client needed. And then I got the oddest thing… I would get a report saying something like: Gender Marital Status Amount of Sales NA NA 865 Male Single 30 Female Single 36 NA was what I chose to put in case I was using referential integrity. I was looking at the sales table and the employees table and if I found a sale which didn't...
