Windows Search 4.0 – First Public Beta

Before I'll drill down about the new version - I guess many of you Vista users are wondering right now "What the hell is Windows Search 4.0?" Windows Search is the built-in search Vista/2008 and is also the "Windows Desktop Search" (WDS) add-on for Windows XP/2003. Windows Search provides many indexing and searching options for desktop files and applications (mainly Outlook) and makes desktop searches a whole lot faster. Maybe you also heard the name "Casino" – A...

TIFF iFilter for MOSS 2007

Hi, At long last, it looks like the issue of having no TIFF iFilter for MOSS 2007 may finally be getting addressed! It has been almost a year since MOSS 2007 (and MOSS for Search) was released and still no viable solution for a TIFF iFilter. In the upcoming Microsoft Office SharePoint Conference 2008, Captaris Software is scheduled to announce several new products form MOSS including the TIFF iFilter. Here's a quote from the Press Release: TIFF iFilter: The Captaris TIFF iFilter automatically...

Search Server 2008 – Many Launch Updates

Hi, It's been a while since we talked about the new Search Server 2008 - I've assembled a list of updates regarding the product so we'll know where we stand. As always when talking about releases – this information is no subjected to many changes so be prepared if you're planning your deployment based on this information: The first issue is of course the release. As you know, we are still in the RC version for several months now with no change. Well, the wait is almost over. The official...

How To: Avoid IE language settings affecting MOSS search results

Here’s another SharePoint search classic that instantly became my favorite: IE Language settings in Search Queries. Recently, one of our customers implemented an internet facing web site and used a search engine. After a week or so in the air, the Q/A team encountered some nasty and unexplained behaviors regarding the Word Breaker that is used for keywords. We’ve investigated this issue some more and found out some “small words” in the MOSS manual: if you index content using one wordbreaker but your...

Search Server 2008 – Finally we can talk about it!!!

Hi, I wanted to blog about this one for a very long time but all I had to watch my mouth shut up until the official declaration. Well – no more waiting! Finally it's out in the open: say a big fat hallo to Search Server 2008 ! As you may have figured out from the product's name, Search Server 2008 is the new guy in Microsoft's enterprise-search family and it comes with a lot of new/improved bonuses for search fans like me. So, as of November 6 (which is today…), you can finally download...

How To: Create a Mobile Search Center for MOSS

Hi, One of the many cool things in MOSS is probably the "M" feature – a way to view some of MOSS's contents with a mobile device (just add "\m" to the requested path and you'll see a Mobile-Targeted page). Not too long ago, I had a customer that wanted to use this feature to enable Mobile Searching and that's how I discovered the unfortunate true - the "M" feature was nowhere to be found when you're talking about Search. Pretty wired, isn't it? Come...

MOSS Search for SSO/Form-Based Authentication Sites

Hi, It's been a while since I wrote something. I know - It sucks. Especially since I've gathered around a couple of really cool stuff to publish. 24 hours is simply not enough! Hope we'll get more in the next SP/Release… This post will deal with a huge issue in the Crawl Engine for MOSS or MOSS For Search: Crawling content for Form-Based authentication. If you ever tried it, you probably saw that we can actually use MOSS to crawl content that is saved on forms-based authentication sites...

Guidance on Wildcard/Boolean search for SharePoint 2007

Hey all, Haven't published anything in a while so my head is pretty packed with new info I'd like to share. However, even the greatest journeys start with one minor step (I think I heard this sentence in Spiderman? Or was it Lord of the Rings? No way I came up with this sentence by myself! Post a replay if you recognize…) so let's dive into our first subject. This post will be dedicated to a very burning Enterprise Search subject – Boolean and Wildcard support in MOSS. I especially think we need...

Search Hacks #1 - Define Scopes by MOSS Metadata

Hey, I guess you've already noticed but I'm a very big fan of the MOSS Search. Yep, I think this is a key feature in MOSS and should get R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Unfortunately, just like any other Microsoft toy - it's not so perfect (and some nasty people will say "not even damm close..."). But Worry NOT! After all, we should always look on the bright side. MOSS Search is probably one of the most customizable features in SharePoint 2007 and we can usually make it much better with some minimal effort. I'm initiating...

Just Released - PDF IFilter for x64 Bit!

Hey all, I've recently posted about the problem we have with PDF IFilters and x64 bit. In the solutions area, I've mentioned a company called Foxit that was rumored to be developing a compatible version. Guess what? THEY'RE DONE and IT'S FREE!!! Here's a brief from the release notes: Foxit PDF IFilter supports following Microsoft products: Windows Indexing Service, MSN Desktop Search, Internet Information Server, SharePoint Portal Server, Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Site Server, Exchange Server...

Wildcards Support for MOSS 2007

We waited an waited and finally it's here. It's called the Ontolica Wildcard for MOSS 2007 and it's free, for unlimited amount of user and for as many servers as you like! How nice is the sound of that, huh? This greatly anticipated wonder belongs to a company named Mondosoft which is a long lasting Gold Partner of Microsoft . Mondosoft considers itself to be the pioneers in the area of Organizational and Enterprise Search as well as Behavior Analytics and they've actually got something to show for...

PDF IFilter for x64 bit

Never get tired of this burning issue and all of the related questions so I decided to try and put all the answers in this one post. Let's review the problem first: Adobe does not have a x64 version of the PDF IFilter for MOSS and so far there are no immediate plans from Adobe to develop one. The supported (and thus the safest) way to index PDF files is to use a 32 bit Windows Server version as our Farm's Index server and run the 32 bit version of this IFilter. Of courser, since we can only have...
