February 2008 - Posts

Hi,

At long last, it looks like the issue of having no TIFF iFilter for MOSS 2007 may finally be getting addressed!

It has been almost a year since MOSS 2007 (and MOSS for Search) was released and still no viable solution for a TIFF iFilter. In the upcoming Microsoft Office SharePoint Conference 2008, Captaris Software is scheduled to announce several new products form MOSS including the TIFF iFilter. Here's a quote from the Press Release:

TIFF iFilter:

The Captaris TIFF iFilter automatically processes scanned images that are stored in SharePoint document libraries, using the powerful Captaris OCR engine to extract the full text of each page and send the text to Microsoft's indexing engine. Within moments, the images are ready to be searched and retrieved across the enterprise using keywords that exist on the scanned page. The TIFF iFilter also provides automated image enhancement and clean-up features such as auto-rotation of upside-down pages, de-skew of pages that were scanned off-center, de-speckle to remove black dots caused by fax noise or poor scan quality, punch hole removal, de-shading and inverse text correction. The TIFF iFilter supports Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express. The TIFF IFilter will be available by mid MS Q4.

So, Mid Q4 – hua? Well, at least we can finally expect some revenue in this everlasting issue…

Tune in to http://www.captaris.com for future updates.

C ya,

Adir Ron.

Hi,

It's been a while since we talked about the new Search Server 2008 - I've assembled a list of updates regarding the product so we'll know where we stand. As always when talking about releases – this information is no subjected to many changes so be prepared if you're planning your deployment based on this information:

  • The first issue is of course the release. As you know, we are still in the RC version for several months now with no change. Well, the wait is almost over. The official launch of the Microsoft Search Server 2008 ("MSS") and Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express ("MSS Express") is currently targeted to the beginning of March. Of course, nothing is final when discussing dates but don't be surprised if the launch will be announced very very soon (could be even next week!).

  • After the official announcement, the product will be available in several waves:
    • MSS 2008 Express: RTM version will be immediately available for download.
    • MSS 2008: Will be available also immediately. I guess you'll see it in the official Microsoft pricelist for April.
    • MOSS 2007: Personally, this is the major release for me. The "SharePoint Search Feature Update" (that will give MOSS 2007 the full capabilities of MSS 2008) won't be available immediately and is scheduled to be released until the end of the year (most likely in the last quarter of 2008). Oh, and it will officially add the federation search capabilities to MOSS.
    • Indexing connectors for all platforms: FileNet and Documentum connectors will be immediately available for download. The Official names will be : "Microsoft Enterprise Search Indexing Connector 2008 for IBM FileNet" and "Microsoft Enterprise Search Indexing Connector 2008 for EMC Documentum".

  • Another very important issue for us foreigners is the localization of the products. First of all - all of the supported languages in MOSS will be also available in the planned MSS 2008 releases. However, those releases will also be in several waves:
    • In the official launch the languages will be the main languages (just like other MS products): English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese
    • The second wave (probably 2-4 weeks after the launch) will include all of the other languages (again – according to MOSS's languages).

That's all for now. Hope the post answered some of your frequently asked questions

Bye,

Adir Ron.

Hi,

It's been a while since the official release of SP1 for MOSS 2007 but god knows there is still work to be done on the product's many issues. Well, I guess Microsoft never rests since the next wave of publicly available hotfixes was just announced: The Post SP1 rollups and the Blackout Package.

The Post SP1 rollups package is already available for download. It contains all of the fixes that were built during the Service Pack Lockdown timeframe (also referred to as SPLock if you ever heard the term) and did not make it into the official Service Pack. You can download the SPLock rollups from this location:

Note: If you install the SPLock rollups, your build number should be 12.0.6301.5000. The version information will also record as 12.0.6300.5000.

However, this is not the only package that was announced. You may also want to have a look at the Blackout Release. The WSSv3 and MOSS blackout hotfixes is an official package that contains all of the fixes from between December and February while the MOSS team re-integrated the branches and could not produce hotfix builds. These hotfixes are also Post SP1 and should include everything that was in the Post SP1 rollups (SharePoint hotfixes are cumulative).  Therefore, if you would prefer to have both the SPLock fixes and the Blackout fixes, I would recommend you issue the Blackout hotifxes.

You can download the Blackout hotfixes from here. Please note that the KBs are yet to be activated and you should check them again in the next few days:

Note: If you install the Blackout hotfixes, your build number should be is 12.0.6303.5000. The version information will also record as is 12.0.6303.5000.

Enjoy,

Adir Ron.
