Project Passau

Friday, June 13, 2014

We just had a Microsoft consultant come in and show us the latest innovation in SQL Server 2014 with Office 365. Though I saw most of it in demos given before, it was still stunning to see the abilities of Office 365 with SQL Server 2014. There was something new to see this time regarding Data Mining and Predictive Analytics in the cloud. This is the first time I saw Project Passau which demonstrated amazing abilities for easily predicting future trends. Microsoft has been offering Data Mining in various ways: through numerous versions of the Data Mining add in...

Mr. Kamal Hathi on SQL Server 2012, PowerPivot, SharePoint and Azure

Monday, April 30, 2012

In a short newspaper article a friend stumbled upon, he saw that Mr. Kamal Hathi, Director of Program Management at Microsoft is coming to Israel for the Think Next Convention. It was also detailed that Mr. Hathi was responsible for the SQL Server Business Intelligence technologies. As the time of the convention drew nearer, I felt more and more interested in trying to catch him for an interview about SQL Server 2012. At the end, I had to finish my questions quickly as Mr. Hathi did not stay till the convention, but I did feel like I had quite...

SQL Server 2012 Released and a Free EBook

Monday, March 12, 2012

SQL Server 2012 was released last weekend (and yes, I know this means I’m late to blog about it!). Along with it were released the Data Mining Add-In for Excel 2010 (with a 64 bit version) and PowerPivot v2.0. Whether your company just bought SQL Server 2012, you downloaded the Express Edition or the Evaluation, you could probably still use some help. The ”Introducing Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (second DRAFT preview)” EBook was released in January and is free to download – enjoy!

Data mining in Excel 2007

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Mr. Donald Farmer gave a lecture yesterday, May 31st 2010, at the Israeli BI User Group. This is what I summed up from the session. Predictive AnalyticsA good predictive analytics project would have:Actionable - you get useful information from itInnovative - gives something new, new insight from the modelTrustworthy - the model makes senseSeamless - part of your everyday operations, so that it will get used more easily by the users "All models are wrong, but some are useful" George BoxNo model is perfect, you can't predict everything, but even then the model is useful. Don't expect to build a perfect...

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

PowerPivot מהווה סוג של mid tier בין Excel Services ל AS Engine מבחינת ה SharePoint.

Microsoft Business Intelligence Roadshow:

SQL Server SP3 Beta and more news

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Well apparently, you can miss out on a lot of things during a two weeks vacation. Luckily I came back in time to see SP3 Beta for SQL Server 2005 get released! But I'll talk about that in a bit... The announcement of Project Gemini in SQL Server 2010 sparked a very heated debate in the BI Community, over how much it might be abused by users as an alternative to an organized DW \ OLAP solution. The discussion did not go unnoticed by Microsoft. I guess I can only sum up by saying that we'll see what happens in...

The future of SQL Server: Project Kilimanjaro, Madison and Gemini

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

The Microsoft BI Conference 2008 has been the source for quite a few announcements. First of all, now that DATAllegro was purchased by Microsoft, the talk is about SQL Server handling bigger amounts of data. There have been posts not just about terabyte projects, but also petabyte projects. The full integration of DATAllegro's technology into SQL Server is planned for the first half of calendar year 2010 and is code named Project Madison. SQL Server 2010 itself is code named Project Kilimanjaro. The real surprise? Project Gemini which sounds like Microsoft giving QlickView a run for its money... but I'm...
