Build 2015 – Impressions so far (Windows and Windows Phone)

יום רביעי, מאי 6, 2015

Look at that, a year has passed since my last blog post. Those last posts were summarizing //Build 2014// and this one will summarize //Build 2015//, so easy for you to follow dear reader. (If you really want to hear more than my blog, I urge you to follow me on twitter, where I tweet my thoughts rather carelessly ). This year’s Build was different. Unlike Build 2014 which was a complete continuation of Build 2013. To give you an example, one of the great introductions of Build 2014 was the “Shared Project” feature, this is no longer needed as the reason it...

Build 2014 – My Impressions Part II

יום ראשון, אפריל 6, 2014

On board flight back to Israel, it's time to sum up the Build experience. All in all it was a solid conference, good content, pretty light sessions, not very technical mostly. In the previous post I've mostly talked about the Windows platforms, this time I will talk mostly about c# and Azure Mobile Services. Windows Azure Mobile Services or WAMS for short, road-map and intentions has bee kept close to the chest till Build, there are new features, but I believe the thing the team has worked on the most is the enabling of c# development on both ends of the pipe...

Build 2014 – Impressions so far.

יום חמישי, אפריל 3, 2014

Build 2014 has been kicked off yesterday, I wasn't able to attend Build2013, but fellow colleagues have attended and most have returned disappointed. The main reason for that was that Build13 was scheduled a bit close to Build2012, causing hype of something big that is about to come, and when it wasn't fulfilled, disappointment was unavoidable. Build 2014 is a different story, Microsoft is not the same company that were in Build2013, the one Microsoft motto is not CEO materials, it's obvious that the new approach is in effect to the last programmer at MS. Microsoft is stepping down from its...

How to do WP8 and resolution dependent images correctly

יום ראשון, דצמבר 8, 2013

BUILD// 2014 Update: I recommend watching the excellent talk by Peter Torr. Peter had kindly reviewed this post an I appreciate it, also recommended linking to the new updated docs. TL;DR: if you need to use images per resolution use the following code, it will save you time. As of today, the Windows Phone platform supports 4 distinct resolutions: WVGA - the original resolution of WP7 WXGA and 720p - introduced with WP8 1080p - introduced with WP8 GDR 3 update (support is still limited), probably as preparations for future devices such as Phablets. I will not reiterate the technical details of each resolution as it is specified...

Zen of delivering code oriented talks

יום חמישי, אפריל 25, 2013

I’ve been doing quite a few presentations lately, and I am currently following a method that has been working out for me quite well for the last year or so. I don’t claim my method to be unique, and it’s definitely inspired by people I’ve seen presenting, worth mentioning are Scott Hanselman and Steve Sanderson. The reason for this post is only to share with you my approach and hope you will find it helpful. I won’t iterate over great presentations tips posts that you can find over the web but just describe the process I am using....

Build// 2012 My Hackaton exprience

יום רביעי, נובמבר 7, 2012

Hey all, A week before Build// I’ve registered to the Build Hackaton. Hackaton is a process which people are gathered in a room, divided into ad-hoc teams and are driven to create awesome and imaginative apps in a short term of time. http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/LauraFoy/BUILD-2012-Hackathon-Kickoff Hackaton has started on Monday, a day which was dedicated to attendee registration, but the hackaton room was already packed with action, a room filled with MS techies (from the relevant Windows8, Windows Azure and Windows Phone teams) were mentoring attendees teams day and night, and attendees who were already...

Pimp my Visual Studio 2010

יום רביעי, פברואר 29, 2012

People often asks me which customizations do I use in my Visual Studio. I think it’s fit that on the day Visual Studio 11 Beta is out I will be sharing my experience with VS2010. For long time I was captured in a misconception, you shouldn’t customize your IDE, otherwise how do other people are going to be comfortable when you need them to to sit on your chair. In some ways that habit is hard to quell, proof of that is that I still pretty much use the default VS color scheme (and Yes...

PDC09 : Advanced WPF Application Performance Tuning and Analysis

יום רביעי, נובמבר 18, 2009

http://microsoftpdc.com/Sessions/CL11 In this presentation, a WPF Facebook like application was presented. Unfortunately the application has issues. during the session we have walked some classic scenarios and some are a bit far fetched (at least from my experience). If you are a WPF developer, see the video, this session should go through video really good, because you will be able to see all the small mouse gestures the presenters are doing  with each application they have used to analyze the problem. To get things in order, the session dealt with those issues: Memory...

PDC09 : Managing Development to Inspire Innovation and Create Great User Experiences

http://microsoftpdc.com/Sessions/VTL30 Bottom line, I recommend you watching this session on Video when it would be available probably tomorrow. Why? Cool Demos. All demos are visual and interesting, it’s really hard to exite most people with a clustering algorithm, but give them a DeepZoom app and sea how everybody starts to the enjoy the smooth experience. Interesting tips on driving innovation on your team. I also liked UI tips being discuessed some are a bit trivial like never life work on you UI thread, push everything to a background...

PDC09 : 1st Keynote Summary

So this is kind of a live blogging from the PDC09’s keynote. Bottom line, as I’ve suspected no big announcements in today’ss keynote. But… it might be for the best, Microsoft focuses on maturing many projects that were discussed on last year PDC. Windows Azure starts to gain momentum with customers using it and driving feedbacks to the team, and as with this timing Azure is about to get into production state, some projects are already starting on getting online for production versions, projects such as WordPress, KBB, and many more important vendors. Microsoft made an...
