When designing a data application, traditionally the bottleneck lies within the database. A traditional on-premises database does not scale very well. It is difficult to split a database between a cluster of machines so usually the database runs on the most powerful machine available which tend to be expensive. To solve the problem some data processing is moved form its natural environment (i.e. DB) to the business tier which scale much better. How do you know if your SQL database is compatible with SQL Azure and can be migrated to the cloud? Well there is a long list of well known issues like SQL Agent and SQL CLR that are not supported, but what about those little details that no body wrote about and eventually will stop you from migrating to the cloud? SQL Management Studio Must be Updated !!!

If you are using SQL Management Studio to connect to your SQL Azure database you have to install the new version of the management studio. You can find it here. The reason is that major updates were done to the SQL Azure engine and the version number was incremented. If you do not upgrade you can expect errors in connectivity.
