Don’t use TxF

May 6, 2012

Windows NT 6.x (Vista/Server 2008 and above) has many reliability mechanisms. Among them you can find the Windows Error Report, Application Restart & Recovery, The Restart Manager, and the Kernel Transaction Manager with Two resource managers, the Transactional Registry and Transactional NTFS, or in short TxF. However today I found out that it is no longer recommended to use TxF and that there are “better” alternatives, according to the MSDN documentation for CreateFileTransacted:

[Microsoft strongly recommends developers utilize alternative means to achieve your application’s needs. Many scenarios that TxF was developed for can be achieved through simpler and more readily available techniques. Furthermore, TxF may not be available in future versions of Microsoft Windows. For more information, and alternatives to TxF, please see Alternatives to using Transactional NTFS.]

So, if you currently use TxF, be aware that it may not be supported in the future.
